Rutgers freshman is presumed dead in suicide after roommate broadcast gay sexual encounter online

A Rutgers University freshman [Tyler Clementi] appears to have killed himself by jumping off the George Washington Bridge after his roommate broadcast live images of the 18-year-old having a sexual encounter with another man on the internet, according to campus and law enforcement sources.  . .  .

Dharun Ravi, 18, of Plainsboro, and Molly Wei, 18, of Princeton, were charged with two counts each of invasion of privacy for setting up a camera in a dorm room on Sept. 19 and using it to view and transmit a live sex scene, said Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan.

It seems likely that Dharun Ravi is a sociopath who thought he was just pulling off a “goof.”  I doubt he comprehended the violation of what he was doing.  I also doubt that he would have felt violated if that had been done to him as sociopathic sexuality is so primitive no privacy is needed.

It is also possible that he was a “good guy sociopath”, not meaning any harm, just seeking a few laughs.  However, this would not be true if he doesn’t accept his fault and error here.  “Good guy sociopaths” do exist, who actually aren’t evil — though obviously the result of his choices was evil.

Unfortunately, in today’s world, sociopaths no longer feel constrained.  In addition to the widespread depiction of sociopathic behavior in popular culture which sociopaths seem to feel licenses their own behavior, there is also the example of modern technological invasions of privacy and surveillance (ISPs keeping track of clients, Google databases, Facebook, etc.).  I believe sociopaths pay attention to all of this in determining what is acceptable behavior.

  1. h ttp://videos.news12.com/ravibrief.pdf This is the brief filed by Ravi’s lawyer trying to get the initial Grand Jury indictment cancelled. It has a lot of details about the first viewing including: ->How Ravi was getting ready to go the shower when Tyler asked him to leave; Ravi said he did not realize that I will have a guest over meant he was being sexiled, and had to leave quickly. ->Ravi explicitly telling others NOT to iChat him after they saw the first few seconds (these were people who Molly was talking to) since the webcam was active. ->Ravi was not present in the second viewing from Molly’s room ->During the Sep 16 hook-up, Ravi was not aware of the sex in his room (TC seemed to have talked about it with HY and said it would be awkard if Ravi found him being f*cked but he did not care). It also shows how a lot of information was misrepresented and how many of the text communications were abridged to show Ravi in a bad light while being presented to the Grand Jury. Talks about how the prosecution claimed evidence that showed that Ravi did NOT put his computer to sleep when they had no evidence to support the claim. The prosecution claim that “he did not have the time” of course is completely bogus since he was in his dorm.

  2. You need to look up your definition of sociopath. He’s not a sociopath as far as I can tell. Just a jerk, as are many 18 year old boys who are in college as a freshmen. There’s been so much complete misinformation, much of it reported by the media, about this case. Better to read the New Yorker article which will tell you many of the facts. I know people really want to hate this kid, but he doesn’t deserve it. I would look more toward Tyler Clementi’s evangelical Christian mother who completely rejected him when he came out to her before starting Rutgers. He was completely devastated by that.

    • Excuse ME? Why is all the blame on Dharum Ravi? Dharum DEFENDED himself from someone he had to share a room with. Since when is it OK to force your roommate out of your room so that you can have sexual contacts? – and iwith the same sex as you are? Dharum had to computer program his BED to alert him if that roommate tried something while he was sleeping. The EXTREME selfish, imposition and disregard for the FREEDOM of Dharum is nothing compared to the exposure of the sick behavior of Clementi which totally disregarded Dharum’s rights to his own personal space because of unwarranted sex? If anyone was a sociopath it was Clementi and we see how he bullied the situation to get his own way with their supposed=to=be shared
room. This unfair “gay” movement has to stop. This blatant over-running of other peoples lives is wrong and why aren’t we enforcing our laws against such injustice to the rest of us? The obviousness of the addiction to abnormal sex is clear to the rest of us and being tolerant is no longer fair or correct. I doubt if Clementi figured out what he was doing was wrong. Clementi was psychologically unfit and was imposing his will upon others -taking away his own roommates freedom and when exposed could not own up to his own failure to be a civil human being.

It is quite common in college, that when two roommates share a room and one of them wants to have sex, then the other skidaddles. If Ravi had wanted to have sex, Clementi would have been happy to get lost and let Ravi do the deed, but he would have been a gentleman and he wouldn’t have livestreamed the session and tweeted about it.

Ravi, however, was far from a psychopath. He’d just grown up in a culture that’s centuries behind ours when it comes to social conventions. He should have taken deal offered–deportation without charge– and moved back there.
